Susan Fletcher
Occupational Therapist
Where are you from?
I was born and still live in Leigh. I joined the RAF in 1993 and over the following 6 year career I lived In Hampshire, Shropshire and completed overseas detachments to Incirlik, Turkey and Medicine Hat, Canada.
Where did you study/ work previously?
I completed my Occupational Therapy degree at the University of Salford, as well as my Masters degree in Advanced Clinical Practice. I have worked around 17 years in the NHS including community paediatrics but mostly adult neurological rehabilitation/stroke.
What is a typical day at MTS like for you?
Each day reflects the varying client's needs so there is no typical day. Intervention can involve a structured neuro rehabilitation treatment programme facilitated through sensory play, to a graded exposure to community activities and social interactions to prepare a client for a return to work. The following day could include assessment for housing adaptations, safer movement and handling equipment and liaison with multidisciplinary team members.
What’s the best thing about your role?
I personally love how varied and diverse the role is so no day is the same. Then to be able to make a difference in a person's occupational performance is so rewarding. Supporting a client through their rehabilitation journey with hope and optimism, whilst managing expectations helps to facilitate an enjoyable but therapeutic relationship.
What do you consider is your biggest achievement within your role?
Just making a positive difference!! Being the best OT I can be for my clients!
